When tourists start to plan a trip to Lanzarote, they think at first to destinations such as Costa Teguise, Playa Blanca, Puerto del Carmen or Puerto Calero. Where is Arrecife?

Arrecife  is the capital of Lanzarote since the XIX century. Since that moment, most of the administrative and comercial activities have been moved to the city. Of course Arrecife offers much more, you should visit it.

What to do in Arrecife

Arrecife is not a huge capital as the other ones, on the contrary it is small. You can visit it by walk.

Arrecife is considered as the smallest municipality of  Lanzarote, with 22 km2. At the same time it is also the most populated town of the island, with more than 55.000 people living there.

Charco de San Ginés

It is situaded by the neihbourhood of  San Ginés. The Charco of San Ginés is created with water coming from the sea, towards the center of Arrecife. It’s is very important because there the first fishermen nucleus was born here.

In the past it was defined as the Venice of the Atlantic. After the reforming of  César Manrique, it  is characterized by small boats and fishermen boats.

The view is very nice: the lagoon with its boats, surrounded by white houses, bars and restaurants. The environment is typical and special and it worths the visit.

Church of San Ginés

In the past the church of San Ginés was an hermitage and later on it became the actual temple. It’s possible to see typical elements of the canarian architecture, mixed with Baroque and Mudejar tints. Beside the church there is the Market Square.

Puente de las Bolas

This bridge made of rocks, has been built in the XVI centurya and it has a longitude of 175 meters.  It was the access to the San Gabriel castle from the mainland.

San Gabriel Castle

It is a fortress  built on a islet in front of the harbour of Arrecife. Its function was to protect the harbour and the city from the attacks from the sea. Today, inside the Castel there is the Museum of History of Lanzarote.

San José Castle

It is known as Fortaleza del Hambre. San José Castle, was built as defense between 1776 and 1779.  In 1975, was built the actual headquarter of the International Museum of Contemporary Art (MIAC).

La Casa Amarilla

In the past it use to be the headquarter of the Cabildo of Lanzarote. It has been declared as place with cultural interest in the year 2002,  and in its bottom flor it is possible to find many expositions about the history and the life of Lanzarote.
