At first sight Lanzarote may seem like a desert-like island, but it offers very special corners like the Cactus Garden. Today in Lastminute Transfer we tell you more details about this magical place that must be visited.
What is the Cactus Garden in Lanzarote?
It is a cactarium or cactus garden. It is located in Guatiza, which belongs to the municipality of Teguise.
It is located in an old arid quarry, known as rofera. Forty years ago nobody in Lanzarote thought, that this place was going to be one of the most visited points of the island nowadays.
The last great work of César Manrique
The idea of building this great cactarium was born in the 1960s. Since then, Manrique made arrangements with the Cabildo de Lanzarote for them to purchase the land where the Cactus Garden would be located and prepare it for the subsequent work.
For sevaral reasons, the construction of this space could not begin until the 80s. The inauguration of this project by César Manrique took place in 1990.
What can we find by the Cactus Garden of Lanzarote
Most of the visitors don’t know what they will find in the 5,000 square meters of this particular botanical garden.
There are about 4,500 cactus of about 450 different species, from all corners of the planet.
Year after year the number of plants increases, adding specimens to the 13 families of cactus available in the garden.
The special arrangement of the plants on terraces invites you to walk through this “amphitheatre”. During the visit, you can find several lagoons with colorful fish and water lilies that break with the green and yellow tones of the cactus and the volcanic environment.
The old corn mill, or millo for the locals, also stands out. It was built at the beginning of the 11th century and restored by Manrique’s will. He wanted to perfectly integrate it into the environment.
There are also several monoliths of volcanic ash that decorate the walk between the cactus.
