When you talk about Lanzarote, you should automatically mention also César Manrique. His artworks are all over the island and the local people is so proud of him.
As Canarian Transfer we want to better explain to you who was Manrique and which are his masterpieces.
Life of Manrique
César Manrique Cabrera was born in Arrecife (Lanzarote) 100 years ago.
During his childhood he showed interest for arts and he started to study architecture at the Laguna University even if he abandoned the studies 2 years later. He moved to Madrid and thanks to a scholarship he started the Escuela Superior de Bellas Artes de San Fernando and he become professor of art and painting.
Few years later he founded Galería Fé and he organized exposition in Lanzarote and in the rest of the world.
In 1964 he went to New York and he got in contact with different artists. There, thanks to a scolarship he created his own atellier and created expositions in the famous gallery Cahterine Viviano.
Manrique really really missed his island, for this reason he came back to Lanzarote in 1966. Since this moment Manrique started to transform Lanzarote in one of the most impressive sites in the world and he started to work with the architect Fernando Higueras.
The artworks of Manrique in Lanzarote
Since when he came back to Lanzarote, Manrique created different artworks. Nowadays is impossible to imagine Lanzarote without Cueva de los Verdes, Jameos del Agua, Mirador del Río, Monumento al campesino, Jardín del Cactus, Taro de Tahiche (actual House museum of César Manrique) and horno-asador by Timanfaya National Park.
He partecipated to the creation of famous artworks also outside Lanzarote, for istance the shopping center la Vaguada in Madrid, the Mirador de la Peña by the island of El Hierro and the Parque Marítimo de Santa Cruz de Tenerife.
