In Canary Islands, thanks to their geographical location, there is the opportunity to see a wide marine fauna. The cold waters join with the warm waters, and for this reason the fauna is even greater, with species that can survive in both type of water.
There are three main reasons that allow a stable colony of cetaceans all the yearlong closed to Lanzarote.
- temperature of the water is stable and always around 18 and 20ºC.
- calm waters, without strong currents and this facilitates the permanence of the colonies
- depth of the water between 500 and 1,500 meters.
Waters near Lanzarote are characterized by fish, organic matter and cephalopods. The characteristics previously explained and the abundance of food, allow to keep a stable population of cetacean.
Which species live near Lanzarote?
On the coasts of Lanzarote and Fuerteventura the existence of up to 30 different species of cetacean has been declared. It is a very huge number, considering the fact that 87 species of cetacean have been discovered in the entire world. That means that in the Canary Islands live more than a third of the total species and it is an ideal area for studies.
In Lanzarote it is common to see the bottlenose dolphin (Tursiops Trucatus), the sperm whale (Physeter Macrocephalus) and the tropical pilot whale (Globicephala macrorhynchus).
Among dolphins it is often possible to see common dolphins (Delphinus Delphis), striped dolphins (Stenella Corevalba), rough-toothed dolphins (Steno bredanensis), beaked whales, gray dolphins (Grampus Grislus) and spotted dolphins (Stenella Frantalis). In Lanzarote it is possible to see also the blue whale (Balaenoptera musculus), the orca (Orcinus orca) and the false orca (Pseudorca Crassidens), among many other types of cetacean.
