You can wake up to completely grey skies in northern Gran Canaria and find sunshine after climbing towards the mountains or travelling to another side of the island. Panza de burro<\/strong> explains much of this contrast and, rather than simply being \u201cbad weather\u201d, it is one of the most characteristic phenomena associated with the Canary Islands trade winds.<\/p>\n

At First Minute Excursions<\/a><\/strong> and Last Minute Transfer<\/a><\/strong>, we like to explain these changes because understanding them makes it easier to interpret the landscape and plan a day without assuming that one local forecast applies to the whole of Gran Canaria.<\/p>\n

What is this layer of cloud?<\/h2>\n

The popular Spanish name refers to a relatively uniform layer of low cloud, mainly stratocumulus<\/strong>, that can cover slopes exposed to the trade winds.<\/p>\n

Seen from below, it creates the characteristic grey or whitish sky. From sufficiently high ground, the same cloud layer can appear as the famous mar de nubes.<\/p>\n

It does not necessarily indicate an approaching rain front or storm. Low cloud can remain over the mid-altitude areas while the mountains above it enjoy completely clear skies.<\/strong><\/p>\n

This is why visitors can leave a cloudy town and find blue sky simply by gaining elevation.<\/p>\n

How does panza de burro form?<\/h2>\n

Three elements are particularly important: trade winds, Atlantic moisture and mountain relief.<\/p>\n

The vientos alisios usually reach the Canary Islands from the north-east, carrying humid air in the lower atmosphere.<\/p>\n

When this air reaches a mountainous island such as Gran Canaria, the terrain forces it upwards along the windward slopes<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

As the air rises, it cools and some of its moisture condenses, encouraging the formation of low cloud.<\/p>\n

A temperature inversion associated with the trade-wind regime can then limit the vertical development of this humid layer. Drier and warmer air lies above it, effectively restricting the clouds below.<\/p>\n

The result is a relatively horizontal cloud blanket pressed against the mountain slopes.<\/p>\n

Its altitude and thickness vary with atmospheric conditions, so the cloud layer should never be expected to remain at exactly the same height every day<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Why can the north be cloudy while the south is sunny?<\/h2>\n

Gran Canaria’s mountainous terrain makes this contrast particularly noticeable.<\/p>\n

Moist trade-wind air primarily reaches the northern and north-eastern slopes. As it meets higher terrain, cloud and humidity increase.<\/p>\n

Conditions can then change as the air crosses the mountains and descends towards leeward areas.<\/p>\n

This helps explain why northern Gran Canaria generally has greener and more humid landscapes while large parts of the south are considerably drier.<\/p>\n

However, cloudy north and sunny south is not a rule that applies every day<\/strong>. Other weather patterns can completely change the situation.<\/p>\n

These variations form part of the island’s remarkable microclimas<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Does it mean it is going to rain?<\/h2>\n

Not necessarily.<\/p>\n

Low cloud can produce mist, high humidity and light precipitation in some situations, but being underneath a grey cloud layer does not automatically mean continuous rainfall<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

There is also an important ecological process connected with cloud moisture: horizontal precipitation.<\/p>\n

Water droplets suspended in cloud and mist can collect on leaves and branches before reaching the ground.<\/p>\n

This additional moisture contributes to the humid environments of some northern mid-altitude areas exposed to the trade winds.<\/p>\n

Places such as Parque Rural de Doramas and Finca de Osorio<\/a> make the relationship between cloud, humidity and the greener landscapes of northern Gran Canaria<\/strong> especially easy to understand.<\/p>\n

When is it most common?<\/h2>\n

The trade-wind regime is particularly important during summer and the mar de nubes reaches a high frequency during this period.<\/p>\n

This helps explain the familiar sequence of cloudy summer days experienced by Las Palmas de Gran Canaria while other parts of the island may have clear skies.<\/p>\n

However, this phenomenon is not exclusive to July or August<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

It can appear at other times whenever suitable trade-wind, humidity and temperature-inversion conditions occur.<\/p>\n

Understanding the mechanism is therefore far more useful than trying to assign it fixed dates.<\/p>\n

From panza de burro to mar de nubes<\/h2>\n

One of the most interesting aspects is how dramatically the view changes with altitude.<\/p>\n

Below the cloud, the sky appears closed and grey. Above its upper boundary, that same layer can look like an enormous white ocean beneath the mountains.<\/p>\n

This is the famous mar de nubes<\/strong>, one of the most recognisable landscapes of the Canary Islands highlands.<\/p>\n

When atmospheric conditions are suitable, some of the miradores de Gran Canaria<\/a> provide an excellent perspective of this division between the humid lower layer and the clearer atmosphere above.<\/p>\n

There is never a guarantee that a particular viewpoint will have a sea of clouds on a particular day. It depends entirely on current weather conditions.<\/p>\n

How to plan around it<\/h2>\n

One of the most common mistakes is checking the weather for a single town and assuming that the forecast applies to the whole island.<\/p>\n

When travelling between the coast, northern areas, median\u00edas and cumbres, it is better to check the forecast for several specific locations<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Carrying a light extra layer can also be useful when moving through areas at different elevations.<\/p>\n

A warm day beside the sea can feel very different in humid mid-altitude areas.<\/p>\n

Grey skies should not automatically ruin the day’s plans either.<\/p>\n

The cloud is part of the northern landscape, contributes to its greener character and may disappear simply by changing elevation or travelling to another side of the island.<\/p>\n

Understanding this phenomenon helps us move beyond the idea that Canary Islands weather is simply a choice between \u201csun\u201d and \u201cbad weather\u201d.<\/p>\n
