Inside, however, the lava kept moving, leaving behind a hollow conduit once the eruption ended. This process gave rise to a system of galleries and caves over six kilometres long.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1016\" data-end=\"1235\">These tunnels aren\u2019t mere caves; they\u2019re true natural works of art. Their walls and ceilings are adorned with lava stalactites and stalagmites\u2014formations that look like abstract sculptures carved by the force of nature.<\/p>\n<h3 data-start=\"1237\" data-end=\"1282\"><strong data-start=\"1237\" data-end=\"1282\">The most famous tunnels and their secrets<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p data-start=\"1284\" data-end=\"1392\">The best-known part of this tunnel system is the section adapted for visitors, now a must-see on the island.<\/p>\n<h3 data-start=\"1394\" data-end=\"1771\"><strong data-start=\"1394\" data-end=\"1413\">Jameos del<\/strong> Agua<\/h3>\n<p data-start=\"1394\" data-end=\"1771\">Created by the genius of C\u00e9sar Manrique, Jameos del Agua is a perfect fusion of art and nature. Manrique transformed a collapsed section of the tunnel into an auditorium, a turquoise pool, and a cactus garden. The <em data-start=\"1634\" data-end=\"1641\">jameo<\/em> (an opening in the tunnel\u2019s roof) is home to a unique endemic species: the tiny blind albino crabs (<em data-start=\"1746\" data-end=\"1769\">Munidopsis polymorpha<\/em>).<\/p>\n<h3 data-start=\"1773\" data-end=\"2110\"><strong data-start=\"1773\" data-end=\"1796\">Cueva de los<\/strong> Verdes<\/h3>\n<p data-start=\"1773\" data-end=\"2110\">This stretch of the tunnels offers a more purely geological experience. It\u2019s a walking route that takes you through dark galleries and narrow passages. It\u2019s one of Lanzarote\u2019s most impressive caves, and its history is as fascinating as its geology. In the past, locals used it to hide from pirates and invaders.<\/p>\n<h3 data-start=\"2112\" data-end=\"2492\"><strong data-start=\"2112\" data-end=\"2176\">T\u00fanel de la Atl\u00e1ntida: the underwater section (science only)<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p data-start=\"2112\" data-end=\"2492\">The tube continues beneath the sea in the T\u00fanel de la Atl\u00e1ntida, with about 1.6 km flooded and ~64 m maximum depth according to recent studies. It is also the longest known submarine volcanic tunnel in the world. Access is restricted and reserved for research and authorised technical cave diving.<\/p>\n<h2 data-start=\"2494\" data-end=\"2843\"><strong data-start=\"2494\" data-end=\"2544\">Why is Lanzarote perfect for learning<\/strong> geology?<\/h2>\n<p data-start=\"2494\" data-end=\"2843\">Because the entire system lies within the UNESCO Global Geopark Lanzarote and Chinijo Archipelago, which protects and promotes this volcanic heritage.
